Shark Cage Diving

There are daily shark diving and viewing tours off Gaansbaai, just a 2 hr drive from Cape Town. The tour includes a door to door shuttle service form Cape Town, light breakfast, 3.5 hrs at sea and a restaurant lunch. Be prepared for an early start though as collection could be as early as 5 am. A short 20 min boat ride brings you to "Shark Alley" a shallow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser rock, one of the worlds most recognised areas for great white shark viewing.

A multi-skilled crew consisting of 3 commercially licenced skippers, 2 Satour registered Tour Guides, 2 Dive Masters, 2 Level 3 Medics and 2 PDP licenced divers ensures that you are in the safest hands possible.

Getting into the cage with the sharks around, is truly the most breath-taking experience you will ever live to remember. When feeding actively around the boat, the sharks may occasionally brush their tail against the cage, but NEVER attack the cage. They are very curious though and often come close-up to the cage, taking a closer look at the diver. A personal, eye-to-eye encounter with this awesome animal, is guaranteed to get the adrenaline going!

Once ready to take the dive, the diver would step onto the diving platform of the boat and slide through the opening at the top of the cage. The lid at the top is now securely closed. Once in position, the diver's head is only approx. half a metre below the surface. A freeboard of approx. 30cm allows the diver to rise to the surface and communicate with the Dive Master on the boat, while the hatch remains securely closed.

Diving takes place on a rotational basis, with two divers down at a time. Time spent in the cage depends on weather/water conditions, shark activity and eagerness of each diver, but could be up-to half an hour at a time. There are rarely more than 6 divers on board at a time, ensuring maximum diving time. An average of 3.5 hrs is spent at sea, it is possible to do more than one dive per day, on a good diving day.  All qualification needed is previous snorkelling experience or Discover Scuba Diving.

The Discover Scuba Course qualifies you to make open water dives up-to 12 meters. This course will be valid for 1 year and accepted worldwide. Courses have to be taken at least the day prior to your shark dive. This is the minimum qualification required to scuba dive in the cage. Should you already have a scuba diving certification of any sort, this would be acceptable to scuba in the cage. Inexperienced divers will be allowed to snorkel in the cage, under supervision of the Dive Master.

To enjoy this tour, you DO NOT have to dive.

Viewing from the boat is equally spectacular, as the sharks come very close to the side of the vessel.

Sharks are surface feeders by nature, ensuring spectacular surface action which often takes place "too close for comfort"! Surface viewers therefore take the pound seat on our specially designed observation platform, with camera's close at hand.

From the safety of the boat, you are able to photograph your friend/s in the cage and at the same time follow the sharks as they move around the boat and cage. Be careful not to miss out on good photographs. Breaching often takes place in the high season and if you are not 100% ready, you may miss out on a good picture.
